SFayers Posted 5 April , 2006 Share Posted 5 April , 2006 One of my granddad's cousins was killed in action on this day and is named on the Thiepval Memorial (see signature below). I was wondering if anyone would know where the battalion was that day and what happened? cheers Steve
Neil Mackenzie Posted 5 April , 2006 Share Posted 5 April , 2006 Steve. 7th Suffolks were in 12 Division and on 3rd July were involved in the attack on Ovillers just to the north of the Albert-Bapaume road on the Somme. Chris Mccarthy's book, The Somme- Day by Day Account, says:- "12th Division attacked Ovillers at 3.15am. Assembly trenches had been dug in no man's land reducing its width from 800 yards to 500 yards. On the right were the 5th Royal Berkshires and 7th Suffolks (35 Brigade), and on the left 6th Queen's and 6th Royal West Kents. By 9am the Division reported total failure at a cost of 2,400 casualties." Neil
