Hambo Posted 6 April , 2006 Share Posted 6 April , 2006 They moved into support trenches from Henencourt Wood during the early hours of the 3rd. With the 5th Royal Berkshires they led an attack on Ovillers-first four waves under heavy fire cleared the enemy trenches as far as the third line- part of the assaulting force reached the village. After severe fighting in which all company commanders were killed-assault was brought to a standstill and the survivors were forced to retire. Casualties over 450. They remained in the forward area after the attack. From Ray Westlakes "British Battalions on the Somme"
