Remembered Today:

Charles Barfoot

Recommended Posts

A chap from my village went down on HMS Hampshire: Pte Charles Barfoot is, however (or appears not to be) on the CWGC register. He is on the local War Memorial. I have been unable to find any further information - has anyone any information, or any clues, please?

I wasn't sure whether to put this in Soldiers, or in the Naval section, but decided on this area to start with. Any help gratefully received!

Steven,

This one is a puzzle

He is not on the casualty list compiled by Don Kindell for the HMS Hampshire site

See http://www.hmshampshire.co.uk/

Actually I could not see any RMA listed there, though there are several RMLI

I also think that if he was in the RMA then his rank would be Gunr and not Pte.

If this chap is on the local war memorial then perhaps the local press of the time may offer a clue?

Best of luck with the puzzle

Michael D.R.

Have you looked for his service register at Kew? Look up his medals in ADM 171/167, which will give his service number (or all the Charles Barfoots in the RMA, but I doubt there'll be many). You can then cross referance that with ADM 159 for his service details.

Thanks. I've never done any Naval stuff, so it looks like a new adventure for me.
