kingsman64 Posted 3 April , 2006 Share Posted 3 April , 2006 Dear all I have just aquired a superb 14/15 Star trio and MID to Florence Adeline Borrett British Red cross Society and Order of St John of Jerusalem. Early research shows she visited Holland in Dec. 1914 to inspect the conditions of the civillian refugees, volunteered for service in Egypt 1915 and served on HMHS Galeka a Hospital ship of Murdos. Then transfered to the BRCS Hospital at Giza and ended the war in the RAF as a Lady Superintendant in charge of the Womens camp at RAF Aboukir. in 1920 She was Matron of a London Hostel for unwanted babies! What was the equivalent rank in the RAF/Army I have seen another Lady Supt. wearing three pips which obviously equates to a Captain so in the RAF would this be a Flight Lieutenant? Was it a commissioned rank? Many thanks Paul
Dolphin Posted 4 April , 2006 Share Posted 4 April , 2006 Paul WRAF ranks seem to be rather confusing. As far as I can work out, they were as follows: Commandant = RAF Brigadier General Deputy Commandant = RAF Colonel Assistant Commandant Class I = RAF Lieutenant Colonel Assistant Commandant Class II = RAF Major Deputy Assistant Commandant = RAF Captain? Administrator = RAF Captain Deputy Administrator = RAF Lieutenant Superintendent, Quartermistress, Assistant Administrator and Assistant Superintendent = RAF Second Lieutenant I hope that this helps a little. SiegeGunner Posted 5 April , 2006 Share Posted 5 April , 2006 Paul, Re-posting your query on the "Women in the Great War" sub-forum might bring you more information about Ms Borrett. Several people who post there specialise in nursing, the BRCS, etc. Mick
