I am looking for any information on two brothers:

1. Private Frank Eamer , 16677, 12th Btn ( Bristols Own) Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1885.

2. Charles Eamer ? Private 20437 , Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1886.

Both resident of Hawkesbury Upton, Gloucestershire.

Two of seven brothers I am trying to research.

Regards

John

John

Was one of the brothers Pte. Joseph George Eamer, aged 20, who fell on July 1st, 1916, whilst serving with the 8th Bn., Somerset Light Infantry? At the outbreak of war, he was working at Mr. Nicholls' Farm in Upper Chalkley. He was originally reported 'missing' before being confirmed k.i.a. I have a photo of him which states he was the second youngest of five brothers in the armed forces. (Parents - Mr & Mrs Joseph Eamer, of Hawkesbury).

Regards,

Nick

John,

Pte Frank Eamer enlisted in late December 1914 or early January 1915 as No 16677 in 'C' Coy 12 Glos Regt. He was drafted to France on 21/11/15. At some point he was transferred to 8 Glos Regt probably after being wounded or a period of illness. He was discharged Class Z 13/6/19. Believe there is a photo of him in the Bristol Times and Mirror (date unknown).

Pte Charles H Eamer enlisted into A Coy 1/4 Glos Regt in Oct 1914 as No 20437 and was later renumbered to 202740.

There is also a George W Eamer who enlisted as No 6989 in 1 Glos Regt in March 1903. Drafted to France 11/9/14 and wounded in Nov of that year and was discharged 1/3/16.

No personal info I'm afraid.

Nick , Yes he is: 17057 Pte Joseph George Eamer 7th Btn SLI, KIA on 1/7/1916 . No known grave and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

I am presuming this picture is from a newspaper circa his death ?

The brother nearest to him in age was 17058 Pte Ernest Eamer, 8th Btn SLI, KIA at Pilkem ridge on 4/8/1917; they obviously signed up together as they have consecutive numbers. Both are commemorated on the war memorial at Hawkesbury Upton, though Joseph George is recorded as George ( he shared the first same name with his father).

Interesting to note there is only a mention of 5 brothers ( this tallies with details on a village Roll of honour produced circa 1915 , the details of which were given to me previously by another forum member. Thanks again Simon!); there were at least 6 brothers who actually served but I believe it is possible a seventh did as well. The youngest to serve was my wifes Grandfather, 31491 L/Cpl Albert Eamer and I began all this researching his award of the MM with the Devonshires.;He did not join up until later as he was born in 1898 so would not have been included in the '5 brothers'

The brother I am not certain that served is Charles; he is not mentioned on the vilage roll of honour but he was the second oldest and there is a 20437 Charles Eamer serving with the Gloucestershire Reg on the NA MIC

I would be very interested to see the picture and caption relating to Joseph as I dont have any photos of the brothers apart from Albert.

Many thanks 'Promenade'.Where did you obtain this information please? What is class Z?

George W. may have been a relative but was not one of the brothers.

Franks son, another George, was KIA in 1945.

We don't know we're born...

Regarding the photo of Pte. J.G. Eamer, my scanner is not working at the moment, but send me a Personal Message with your postal address & I will send you a copy. I think it was from the 'Dursley Gazette'.

I've also downloaded the MIC's on these further two Eamer brothers:

20437 Charles Eamers MIC shows him transferred to the Corps Of Hussars; there is no date of entitlement to Medals but he was only eligible for the Victory and BWM so it must have been after 1915 when he joined up and this would fit in with his lack of inclusion in the village roll of honour.

I am still looking for any confirmation that I have the right Charles i.e. a link with Hawkesbury Upton, Glouc.

Any Hussars specialists out there?

Regards

John
