Graham Stewart Posted 2 April , 2006 Share Posted 2 April , 2006 The 37th Training Reserve Battalion/8th(Reserve)Brigade was formed on the 1st September 1916 from the 9th(Reserve)Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, which itself had been formed as a "Service" Battalion at Portsmouth in October 1914. As a "Service" Battalion it had been allocated to the original 96th Brigade/32nd Division, but the original 30th to 35th Divisions, which were authorised on the 5th November 1914 were broken up on the 10th April 1915, and all of the attached "Service" battalions became 2nd Reserve Battalions. Again for reasons known only to the GWGC Pte John Mitchells regimental number has been incorrectly given as 8/17083, which implies that he had served with the 8th(Service)Bn,R.Berkshire Regiment, which he did not. His correct regimental number is infact TR/8/17083, which is unique to units of the Training Reserve. In July 1917 the 37th Training Reserve Battalion was renamed the 210th(Graduated)Battalion, Training Reserve and a new 37th T.R.B. formed on the 10th July 1917. In October of the same year the 210th(Graduated)Bn,T.R., became the 52nd(Graduated)Bn, Devonshire Regiment on 24/10/1917, while the new 37th T.R.B., became the 37th(Young Soldier)Bn,T.R., but on the 1st November 1917 it was renamed the 53rd(Young Soldier)Bn, Hampshire Regiment. Both of these units coverted to "Service" battalions in 1919. The 52nd(Grad)Bn, Devonshire Regt converted to the 52nd(Service)Bn, Devonshire Regt on 8/2/1919 and were disbanded on the Rhine on 19/2/1920. The 53rd(Y.S.)Bn, Hampshire Regiment became 53rd(Service)Bn, Hampshire Regt on 8/2/1919. It moved to the Rhine the same year and was absorbed by the 2/4th Bn, Hampshire Regt(T.F.). Graham.
