Fransmoi Posted 28 March , 2006 Share Posted 28 March , 2006 [font=Ar ial][font =Arial][f ont=Arial][s ize=1] A friend in South Africa has asked me to search for a MURDO ALEXANDER MacRAE born 18 Sep 1898 in Beauly, Scotland .He died in Johannesburg in 1980. He saw action in Belgium for just 2 weeks in 1918 (so perhaps at the end of the war ?) He served with the Argylls and I will attempt to attach his picture resplendant in his uniform.Any clues from his uniform as to his battalion or rank? Sorry no regimental details -I've tried without success to pin down which battalions were where in 1918. Thanks all, Frances Inverness SCT. Fransmoi Posted 28 March , 2006 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2006 Thank you so much for this.I've been hunting in the wrong places obviously. Any one know if they saw action in Belgium as the family thought? On this day when so many proud regiments carry their colours forward. Frances. jay dubaya Posted 26 July , 2008 Share Posted 26 July , 2008 The 4th (Extra Reserve) Bn. remained in the UK throughout the war and didn't serve overseas as a unit, that's not to say that officers and men were not attatched to other units already serving overseas. I've had a quick look at the MICs but sadly cannot find one for a Murdo MacRae serving with the Argylls, that said, he could have been drafted into another regiment and saw overseas service with them. Sorry I can't be of more help, Jon
truthergw Posted 26 July , 2008 Share Posted 26 July , 2008 He is wearing an Argyll sporran. You do not have a better picture? The glengarrie suggests earlier rather than later in the war. There were all sorts of alarms and excursions in 1918 and many men were sent to the front from home postings. It is quite possible that he was one of them.
