Here is some information on him Sheppard went overseas to France / Flanders on 23/11/1914 with the 1st East Surreys (number L7361). At some stage he transferred to the 12th East Surreys and ended up as Acting WO2 in the Buffs (number L12564) but my records do not show which Battalion he was with.
