Ship types and locations

Peter Beckett

Recommended Posts

I have just downloaded a relatives list of ships, etc on which he was assigned to and hoping some-one can tell me which was a shore based depot and where, and which was a real ship.

Bowcarvon?

Alexandra

Blake

Partridge

Tournaline ?

Vivid I

Cambridge

Colossus

Pembroke I

Icarus

Cressy - I know as he lost his life on 14th Sep 1914 due to a certain submarine, U9.

He signed up on the 5th Mar 1892

Thanks

Peter

Peter,

A lot depends on the dates, as some of the ship may been used for training or other purposes/in reserve depending upon the date. The obvious ships would include:

Alexandra -- ironclad, completed 1877

Blake -- first class protected crusier, completed 1892

Partridge -- composite gunboat, completed circa 1888

Tourmaline -- composite screw corvette, completed 1876

Colossus -- battleship, completed 1911

Cressy -- armoured cruiser

Icarus was the name of a composite screw sloop completed in 1885 -- and sold in 1903. If she was the next to last ship your relative served on and your list is in chronological order, it's not the same vessel.

Best wishes,

Michael
