Remembered Today:

Cutlass use in the Zeebrugge Raid

Hi,

A source on another WW I forum showed me the use of the cutlass during training before the raid. I have evidence that it was also used during the raid by at least one man (which I suspect to be Wing Commander Frank Arthur Brock, RNAS) and it was of course still in use by the German 'matrosen' on the smaller ships of the Kaiserliche Marine and by the artillery men of the German navy.

Is there any other evidence of it's use during the raid ?

Thanks and best from Johan

I cannot offer any proof of use, but they were also said to have been used during the storming of the Altmark in WW2.

They were used as part of PT drill during WW1, as my Grandfather was part of a Cutlass swinging demonstration group that performed on Broadway New York, during 1917 I think. He was serving on board HMS Cochrane at the time. If they were in the armoury I am sure they would have been used, nasty thing!!
