snavek Posted 20 March , 2006 Share Posted 20 March , 2006 Duncan, Don't know about VDG, but how about 2nd Divisional Supply Column, Canadian Army Service Corps? Keith
Neil Burns Posted 20 March , 2006 Share Posted 20 March , 2006 VDG = venereal disease, gonorrhea I'm not sure what 2 DSC is but Keith's response seems plausible. My thanks to Brett Payne's list of service record abbreviations! Neil
Duncan Posted 20 March , 2006 Author Share Posted 20 March , 2006 Thanks both. His file is huge, but mostly unreadable as it's just 90% abbreviations and impossible to read hand-writing. I guess those French brothels were too much for him! Anyone know if this was treatable at the time?

Penicillin which is the main cure for socially unexceptable diseases of the time wasn't discovered by Captain Alexander Fleming R.A.M.C. until 1928, goodness knows what they took to cure their problem of passing razors before this date. snavek Posted 21 March , 2006 Share Posted 21 March , 2006 Some very lurid stories going round in my N.S. days, something akin to cleaning your rifle barrel, only using sand paper instead of 4 by 2! Keith
182 CEF Posted 21 March , 2006 Share Posted 21 March , 2006 There is a very good book that has a couple of chapters on this "problem" It is about Civil War "cures" however I am sure they were using the same treatments during WW1..it also shows period photos. The book is packed away, but here is a link to a review about it. Very interesting reading. http://www.amk.ca/books/h/Story_Wouldnt_Tell Dean
