Malcolm Posted 18 March , 2006 Share Posted 18 March , 2006 The 9th Provisional Battalion you mention appears in Brigadier James ' British Regiments ' as: 3/6th and 3/9th Battalions TF. Formed March 1915, 8/4/1916 at RIPON, and became Reserve Battalions, 1/9/1916 the 6th Reserve Battalion absorbed the 9th Reserve Battalion at Catterick in Lowland Reserve Brigade, and was in turn absorbed in July 1917 by 5th Reserve Battalion. The 1/9th Battalion was of course the Glasgow Highlanders Battalion HLI which was in the thick of it in France and Flanders. Aye Malcolm

Wienand Drenth Posted 19 March , 2006 Share Posted 19 March , 2006 Hello, Another battalion that may be related might be the 9th Provisional Battalion (TF). These provisional battalions were formed early 1915 from men of TF battalions not willing or unfit for overseas duty. Roughly speaking one provisional battalion was formed for each line regiment, but there were exeptions of course. This battalion is distinct from the 9th (Reserve) Battalion mentioned by Malcolm earlier. These battalions had a home defence role. In January 1917 they were affiliated to line regiments, and the 9th Provisional Battalion became the 21st Bn, the Highland Light Infantry. Regards, Wienand
