peterashton Posted 12 March , 2006 Share Posted 12 March , 2006 My grandfather's navy record has the following remark: "NZ 3674/18 conduct highly commended on the occasion of the loss of HMS ?u?dyt??? on 18.10.17" Unfortunately the name of the ship is illegible. I can find no record of any ship being lost on that date. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
Terry Denham Posted 12 March , 2006 Share Posted 12 March , 2006 There are several ships listed as being lost on that date but none of them seem to fit those letters! Can you post that section of the record?

Is it possible that this has been miss-interpreted by being partly obsured in a similar manner to the name? If so it is possible that the reference is to HMS Goldfinch which has the correct number of characters one of which is coincident and the others could be obscured to look like those you included. This H (Acorn) Class destroyer of 780 tons displacement was wrecked at Start Point on the night of 18/19.2.1915. I hope I am not muddying the waters yet again. On closer inspection it could be HMS Candytuft lost on 18/11/17. The details were probably entered incorrectly.
