Hi folks,

Is it possible work out which battalion of the Gordon Highlanders a man served from his service number and his date of enlistment?

If this is possible can anyone help me?

The man is Private William Anderson 12159 and he enlisted on 31st of May 1915.

Thanks

Donny

No,this number is a 1914 New Army{Kitchener Volunteer}Number & he would have been posted,drafted to any Battalion that needed him,most likely one of the Service Battalions but there is no guarantee of this,if the Battalion is not given on the Medal index Card then the next step should be the Medal Rolls which usually carry the Battalions served in.

His MiC has a few other numbers on it:~

Gordon Highlanders: 5635{TF}

Gordon Highlanders: 242451{TF~Rebnumbering}

14th London Regt :528117{TF}

which would mean whichever Battalion he started in he was posted to a TF Battalion & the to the London Scottish.{TF}

I'm not saying that this is a reliable indicator of anything, but the soldiers who had numbers 12150, 12152 and 12153 all died in the war (July or August 1916), so they are recorded in "Soldiers Died in the Great War" and were all in the 6th Battalion.

Donny,

I don't think he died in the war. I have provided a link to the SNWM (Scottish National War Memorial). It lists every Scottish soldier killed (and non-Scots serving in Scottish units).

This link has all of the William Andersons that died:

http://www.snwm.org/website/frames.html

Also, occasionally, the soldier's battalion is recorded on the MIC (Medal Index Card) held at the National Archive (NA). Here is a link to yer mans:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...&resultcount=51

Failing this it can be a trwl through regimental muster rolls, and the medal rolls at the NA

Possibly, someone on the forum may have access to these :)

All the best

Thanks Tom,

Yes my grandad did survive the the war, he was disabled and honourably didcharged on 09/03/19.

Thanks for the links, I have his MIC, are both the regimental muster rolls and the medal rolls held at the National Archives and would the Gordon Highlanders regimental museum have any info.

Thanks Donny.
