vervos Posted 9 March , 2006 Share Posted 9 March , 2006 Thanks to all who helped identify HMS Furious and her battlebag. There is an aircraft visible on the foredeck. Is it a Pup, as some have suggested to me, or perhaps A 1½-Strutter? Were they still in service at the time the picture was taken? Hope you chaps can help again. Cheers, Vervos
SteveE Posted 9 March , 2006 Share Posted 9 March , 2006 I have it on good authority from BobH (who can't post a reply because he's forgotten his password ) that it's a 1-1/2 Strutter and they were in service until the end of the war on board ships. Hope this helps Steve
J T Gray Posted 9 March , 2006 Share Posted 9 March , 2006 I nearly posted suggesting that it was a 1 1/2 Strutter, then decided it was an airship thread. Ah well! I am with BobH and Steve on this - you could perhaps post a higher-res scan of the 'plane but I'm fairly sure that it is a Strutter rather than a Pup. Adrian Thanks to all who helped identify HMS Furious and her battlebag. You knew my old landlady too?

J T Gray Posted 9 March , 2006 Share Posted 9 March , 2006 Here is a 'detail'... apologies for quality, and thanks for your help. Vervos The trestle in front of one wing and behind the other make it slightly awkward to see. However I'm sure that the strut arrangement is different to a Pup, and the size relative to the two men by the tail makes it a larger beast than a Pup. Having seen the Shuttleworth Collection's Pup at close hand, it is amazing how small it is! Better men than me, I'm sure, will confirm this. (that sounds a bit bigheaded, doesn't it? That's not the intention!) ADrian

Cheers, Vervos I agree that it is a Sopwith 1½ Strutter, aka Ship Strutter. BTW There is another picture of Furious with that airship on her stern and taken from the air, starboard side from slightly forward of amidships and pointing at the starboard rear quarter in 'The RFC/RNAS Handbook 1914–1918' by Peter Cooksley, page 79. The Airship is clearly SSZ 59.
FAAAEd Posted 9 March , 2006 Share Posted 9 March , 2006 I agree that it is a Sopwith 1½ Strutter, aka Ship Strutter. One note, magnification of the enlarged image reveals the classic W arrangement of centre struts between upper wing and fuselage of the Strutter. The pup had a simpler arrangement. FAAAEd Posted 13 March , 2006 Share Posted 13 March , 2006 And of course the fact that the pup was a single seater and this has two occupants! I read somewhere very recently that a Pup had been unofficially modified to seat two but was reverted when higher authority found out. Sounds about right IME.
