Duncan Posted 6 March , 2006 Share Posted 6 March , 2006 Can this be the same person? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Victory-Medal_W0QQit...1QQcmdZViewItem http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...1&resultcount=1 1901 Census Ben Henry Balls, aged 42, watchmaker & jeweller from Barnsley. He’d be 55 when the war broke out!?! Love the name though. Do you think his mates took the p**s?
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 6 March , 2006 Share Posted 6 March , 2006 I wouldn't have thought so A Territorial in the Suffolk Regt is a long way from Barnsley!!!
Muerrisch Posted 6 March , 2006 Share Posted 6 March , 2006 I believe his surname would not have caused much comment then ..... the words in use tended to be slightly longer versions [as texting was not a consideration!]. 70 Ballses made the supreme sacrifice, by the way. Stebie9173 Posted 6 March , 2006 Share Posted 6 March , 2006 This is the "Obvious" one. BMD Balls, Benjamin 1894 December Births Plomesgate Suffolk 1901 Census Name: Benjamin Balls Age: 7 Estimated birth year: abt 1894 Relation: Son Gender: Male Where born: Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England Civil parish: Aldeburgh Ecclesiatical parish: St Peter and St Paul Town: Aldeburgh County/Island: Suffolk Country: England But then again, is anything really obvious in this game??? There are six other Benjamin Balls living or born in Suffolk at 1901. And 15 Benjamin or Ben Balls born between 1870 and 1900 that could also be candidates (though a few of those are listed as later died) + 9 with Ben/Benjamin as midddle name. Could be any of them to be honest... Steve.
Duncan Posted 6 March , 2006 Author Share Posted 6 March , 2006 Ohh yes, didn't notice the TF number. Just shows the danger of assumption when it comes to the 1901 census. I wonder how many in my collection aren't actually to the person in the 1901 Census I think they are?
