Here are a few very interesting places to see some excellent photos & illustrations concerning the Great War.

La Grande Guerre en Dessins

Welcome and sorry because there's no available english version of this site !

The main purpose here is to present galleries of french artists' drawings from WW1 period.

Some of these artists have been soldiers, the other ones were too old but they all did their drawings during the war.

If you want to look at the galleries, please choose 'Les Dessins' from the homepage

The History of a Soldier

JOSEPH LESAGE (1884-1918) a First World War story

14 - 18 Photos de Guerre

The photos of a French Soldier : Yves Troadec

I am paticularly interested in illustration (maybe as I illustrate myself ;) ) & some of the illustrations shown here are exceptionel. Sometimes there seems to be more power in an illustration than in a photo.

I hope they are of some interest to you all.

Thanks for these links - it's a great delight to have some French orientated links - it's too easy for us to forget the role the French played, after all it was (and still is) their country.

Can anyone else suggest any other good french or french orientated web sites?

http://www.grosser-generalstab.de/

this is a great site with many pictures, it is in German though :D .

There are even reproductions of the old German uniforms from a cigarette card album.

Best wishes

http://www.stahlgewitter.com/

this site (in German as well) takes you into the most horrible reality of WWI and shows the cruellest ways in which human beings can treat each other.

Daniel

Good sites Daniel, I visited them quite a while back (& downloaded the whole of http://www.grosser-generalstab.de/ which I put onto a CD for reference - the uniforms are extremely good).

Thanks

:)

Annette Burgoyne - I understand how images of death & destruction can seem pointless & even bad (when used in a sort of morbid, gorey way).

But sometimes seeing what the soldiers lived through day to day really does bring the sheer insanity & horror of war home.

But if someone get's off on looking at these pictures then they are disturbed & sick minded.

There is definitelty a need to see the horrors of war - but it should be done wiuth respect & great sadness...

Hi Daniel

I am sure some will say there is no need to show such pictures but they do bring home the reality of war.

Annette

Hi Annette, that was my sentiment too and I hesitated to mention that site. I was shocked when I first saw it.

I certainly did not intend to enhance people with a morbid taste for brutal scenes.

My mentioning this site should be deleted if people are offended.

Yes- A picture can say more then works and I felt very sad looking at them, there is one with guitar laying about and that brings it home that those lumps of shattered flesh, were every day chaps who just wanted to live.

Hi Annette & Daniel - it's true it seems so utterly inconceivable for us to image the people who eventually got used to seeing death & destruction everyday. I just hoped that all that sadness was not in vain & that we as a society really learn from the past & the enormous price our forebears paid.
