I previously requested assistance to help trace the Turnbull brothers information and was grateful to receive some assistance that we already knew, but other information about a possible half brother that blew our theories out of the water as one of the brothers enlisted under a false name.

We plan to visit all four graves at Easter and I am desperately trying the locate the battelion positions on set dates when the individual brothers died. Jack Alexander has been kind enough to supply details for one brother. The others, together with battalion details and date of death are:

Highland Light Infantry - 18th Btn - 25/08/17

Highland Light Infantry - 10/11th Btn - 09/04/18

Cameron Highlanders - 6th Btn - 31/07/17

Any help would be appreciated in identifying how these brave men perished. If there are Military Museums that I could contact these addresses would be appreciated.

To date we have Cemetary details and Medal records.

Try the Scottish Army Museum at Edinburgh Castle [cant remember the exact title but someone else will - search the web] but also go to the National Archives and search their catalogues for war diaries

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...p?sLeafletID=20

should give you the guide.

Also search the web for histories of the regiments and order on inter library loan and also use the search facility on this website at the top of the page for possible refs

hopefully that gives some clues!

First one is 35th Division - I am not sure of this one but, the Division was not in any major battle on this day.

Second was in 15th Division and they were East of Arras across the Cambrai road holding on after the March German attack. Sir Charles Fergusson sent a message congratulating them on holding on.

Third was 15th Division at the battle of Pilkem and the 6th Camerons sufferred most casualties near Iberian Farm and Beck House.

Aye

Hi,

>>Third was 15th Division at the battle of Pilkem and the 6th Camerons sufferred most casualties near Iberian >>Farm and Beck House.

The 31st July 1917 is an auspicious day as its the first day of the major offensive known as 3rd Ypres or Passchendaele.

According to McCarthy the action of the 15th Division is as follows:-

45th Brigade's task in support, was to pass through and take the Green Line. It attacked on the Divisional front with the 6th/7th Royal Scots Fusiliers and the 6th Camerons. The 11th A&SH sent two platoons south of the railway to form a defensive flank between the 15th & 8th Divisions

At 2pm a counter attack was launched at the Camerons and the 55th Division on their left. This was fought off, but 164th Brigade(55th Div), facing a second attack with both flanks exposed, withdrew to form a line from Pommern Castle along the ridge to Beck House. The 10th/11th HLI were sent out to strengthen the flank at Iberian Farm. That night the line was consolidated.

From what I can see the 45th Brigade (inc Camerons) started in Trenches just behind a trench called Cambridge Road and pushed forward from that point towards Frozenberg (?).

Hope this helps

Cheers

James
