Michael Lowrey Posted 2 March , 2006 Share Posted 2 March , 2006 Chris, In September 1916, the submarine war changed. The German navy introduced a significant new threat into its Flanders-based submarine flotilla: UCII submarine minelayers. These boats had enough range to lay their 18 mines anywhere in the English Channel, Irish Sea, or Bay of Biscay. They also had a quite respectable ability to attack shipping (88mm gun, 3 torpedo tubes and up to seven torpedoes carried). UC 26 sailed on October 24, 1916 on the third patrol by an UCII through Dover. She laid small minefields on October 25 and 26 before Boulogne, Dieppe, Le Havre, and Cherbourg before returning home (bad weather prevented action against shipping). Galeka hit one of the newly laid mines and sank. Best wishes, Michael
