Help with Medal Card please

HI

I have the medal card of my Great Uncle Francis Edward Hurst. He was with the 1st/8th Bn. London Regiment and was killed in Cambrai. The first medal card I found does not mention that fact so I searched again for another card and came up with another one that stated that Francis was a private in the ASC M2/078392. Please excuse my ignorance but have I found the right man? It was the only other card for a Francis E that I could find. The references for the medals are totally different but the second card does state that he was in France.

yep your right I am totally confused!

Is this the card you originally downloaded?

The ASC man is likely to be a completely separate man, though there can sometimes be a bit of doubt.

Steve.

Thanks Steve I had found Francis on CWGC and the medal card that you found was the one that I had already downloaded. It says that he received the Victory and British medals but doesn't say he was awarded anything else or even went to France in the first place.

Men who went overseas after 1st January 1916 received the Victory & British War Medals only. The medal cards for these men would not have had a date of entry or a theatre of war (it was just War Office practice not to enter these bits of information)

If you have a 1914 or 1914-15 Star that will mean there is another card out there somewhere, but there were very few of these multiple/mismatched cards.

The fact that he has a 4-digit number on his MIC means that he would have gone overseas before early 1917, probably with the 1/8th Battalion.

Hope this helps,

Steve.

Hi Steve

That would make sense then. I was under the misunderstanding that everyone who was in a theatre of war would get the 1914/15 star. I haven't actually seen the medals only been told about them a cousin of mine has them.

Thanks for all your help

Penny
