Guest Shelley Williams Posted 1 March , 2006 Share Posted 1 March , 2006 I think I am posting in the right section. As my Great Grandfather was in the 1st Bn, Dorsetshire Regiment, I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone else here had a relative that was in the same Regiment, have any story's been passed down etc. I was reading some old material in the Family Records Centre, I think it was Times online or something similar, and it said that there was a plaque in Sherbourne Abbey, Sherbourne, Dorset which noted all the soldiers names from the Dorsetshire Regiment that died and that a service takes place yearly. Does any one live near to this Abbey? Do you have any information on this fact, does the service still take place, have you looked at the plaque. If anyone lives near to here, would they mind taking a trip along to the Abbey for me please? Thank you, Shelley
Peter B Posted 1 March , 2006 Share Posted 1 March , 2006 Hello Shelley My stepfathers father was in the 1st Battalion Dorsetshire from August 1916, prior to that he was in the 6th Dorests, his story appears here. http://www.1914-1918.net/heroes/davis.htm Unfortunally the majority of photos and letters he had relating to his war service were destroyed when there house was bombed during WW2. Have you tried the Regitiment Musuem for more info they have a web site http://www.keepmilitarymuseum.org They may have info on your great grandfather. HERITAGE PLUS Posted 1 March , 2006 Share Posted 1 March , 2006 Shelley There are several stands of colours of the Regiment hanging in the Abbey as well as a number of memorial plaques. The World War Memorials are in the form of Rolls of Honour Books kept in glass lidded cases. I believe but can't confirm that the Annual Regimental Service of Remembrance was/is held on the last Sunday in May each year. I suggest you contact the Abbey to confirm, contact details are on the website below.
