CSMMo Posted 28 February , 2006 Share Posted 28 February , 2006 Welcome to the Forum. In the Artillery (RFA, RGA and RHA) there were Saddlers, Farriers, Shoeing Smiths and Fitters or Wheelers (and Sergeants) for each trade. Saddlers and shoeing smiths were separate trades. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 28 February , 2006 Share Posted 28 February , 2006 Bootmakers make & repair Leather Boots,{for the Men in it},each Unit would have its own Bootmakers, being Artillery, with lots of extra Leatherwork He may have had two jobs,Saddler{ie Saddlery & Bridlework} & Bootmaker, A Shoesmith/Farrier was concerned with Metal Horse~shoeing & wrought ironwork requisite in such a unit. bcerha Posted 28 February , 2006 Share Posted 28 February , 2006 However, remember that the farrier/shoeingsmith didn't just make shoes for the horses he was also responsible for the health and maintenace of the horses feet - a seperate and considerable task in itself - and as they say....no foot, no horse!
