hi

i am new to this forum and am trying to trace my great grandfather this is all the info i have and would be greatful for any tips and ideas on how to find out a bit more about him;

his name was THOMAS WILLIAM SMITH

he was a saddler (boot maker) in the royal field artilery

he was married in sept 1901 to clara isabel wadley (of bedminster) bristol

i dont know where he was from,but after marriage lived in bedminster

he died at home in 1923 from 'somthing to do with the war' whatever that is? :huh:

i know nothing else,he is not on any census returns and i cant find a birth of death cert why??

please help sorry for the long speach! :)

The Medal Index show three likely candiates

No: 851328; Rank: Serjeant or

No: L/7681 Rank: Driver or

No: 18615; Rank: Shoeing Smith and then Gunner

But you will need help from a Gunner specialist to go further

Hang around for a while ; some-one is bound to pop up

It sounds like you may benefit from a peruse of the "Long Long Trail" @ the Header of this Forum,Here there are details of how to go about researching ones Ancestors from WW1 Records,& details the Medal Index Cards that Steve has given you from the National Archive Online Site,these are the Cards used by the Army Medal Office to record details of which WW1 & other Medals were awarded to a particular Service Man or woman,you will see many references here on the Forum to "MiCs" this is what is being referred to,Happy hunting,if you have an Army Number for your Man it would greatly assist in any searches for him.
