staffsreg Posted 27 February , 2006 Share Posted 27 February , 2006 I have asked this earlier, but to no avail...who would have been in charge of the Non Combatant Corps..officers of the same persuasion or invalided officers or....? Would they have had duties to do on the Western Front such as fetching and carrying, or were they left at home with special duties??
Chief_Chum Posted 27 February , 2006 Share Posted 27 February , 2006 Hi Ivan, Sgt Saunders, VC, formerly 9/Suffolk served with the NCC for a time after he was wounded at Loos so I suspect that previously wounded or medically low grade officers ran the NCC, guarding POW camps, etc I believe. I hope this is helpful. Cheers, Taff
Terry_Reeves Posted 27 February , 2006 Share Posted 27 February , 2006 Officers and NCO's of the NCC were men who were normally medically downgraded and were drawn from many different regiments. They were accoutred as for the infantry and were not conscientious objectors. Terry Reeves
staffsreg Posted 27 February , 2006 Author Share Posted 27 February , 2006 Thanks Gents, but would the NCC have served overseas, in the line of fire as it were? if not why not?
Terry_Reeves Posted 27 February , 2006 Share Posted 27 February , 2006 The NCC did serve overseas, but their conditions of service debarred them from serving in the front line. They were principally employed on the Lines of Communication, many of them working at ports unloading ships ect. Terry Reeves
