Matthew Posted 24 February , 2006 Share Posted 24 February , 2006 I am comfortable with Great War research (sort of) but I could do with some advice about a Second war casualty. I have inherited my grandmother's scrap book which charts, in photos, the life and death of 10570656 L/Cpl J H Gardner of the REME. He was killed on the 22nd December 1942 and is buried near Bugie which I take to be in North Africa. I have photos of the grave and a letter from his CO. What I can't do is fit him into my family tree or understand what his connection was to my grandmother. Is there a source where I can start to get more information on Corporal Gardner? ian turner Posted 24 February , 2006 Share Posted 24 February , 2006 Matthew, Have you looked him up on CWGC? He is listed as Iain Hunter Gardner, and it gives some next of kin info, which may or may not be helpful to you. One thing to be prepared for is the possibility that he was a 'sweetheart'. Matthew Posted 24 February , 2006 Author Share Posted 24 February , 2006 Ian, Thanks for the advice; very helpful. Don't think he was a sweetheart but you never know! Do the second war records survive; it would be interesting to find out a little about the action in which he died. M

Jake Drummond Posted 27 April , 2006 Share Posted 27 April , 2006 Could they have been casualties being returned to Blighty from action elsewhere, dying from wounds en route?
