Eceabat Posted 24 February , 2006 Share Posted 24 February , 2006 Pals, as far as Turks are concerned, the island's name is Gokceada, with the name being changed after it reverted to Turkish control following the First World War. However, is also know to locals as Imroz, a derivation of the older Greek name. Following the founding of the Turkish Republic, many place names were changed in this region and indeed across the country. Most of those changed formerly were of Greek origin, as was the case with Gokceada, Eceabat (formerly Maidos) and Krithia (now Alcitepe). Ozzie Posted 24 February , 2006 Share Posted 24 February , 2006 Doesn't it bring home, just how tough the land was, to fight in. Those poor blighters. And to think that they held on for so long. Thanks Grant. Cheers Kim

ianw Posted 25 February , 2006 Share Posted 25 February , 2006 What a place to fight - and they didn't even have adequate maps initially. Great pics. I presume they are merged digital shots ?
Julian Whippy Posted 25 February , 2006 Share Posted 25 February , 2006 Ian The comment about the lack of adequate maps is likely to get a few challenging posts, possibly?! I have a book, yet to read it, "Grasping Gallipoli" and I think it makes some inroads into the argument about the map issue. Have you seen the book ? grantmal Posted 26 February , 2006 Author Share Posted 26 February , 2006 Thanks for the comments.....yes, the panoramas are digitally "stitched" - most, when printed, are a metre wide. Haven't posted some of the really wide ones as they would appear ridiculous in this format. Here are a few single or double frame shots, some with their 1915 counterparts...
