My Grandfathers Edward keaneys award for the military medal for bravery(Salonika) appears in the March Gazette 1919 Does anyone know the usual time difference between the actual award and the appearence in the Gazette. Reason I am asking is that the war obviously ended in 1918 in Salonika. Does the time lapse seems excessive? Also does anyone know what the abreviations 185 HY,BY (Royal Garrison Artillary) relate to as this appears on his medal card. Thirdly can you find a soldiers home address from the website?

Hope you can help Brian Johnson

185th Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery

The time frame for his award of the MM is not uncommon especially @ this period of the War,there was something of a Backlog of awards that had to be "Gazetted"{He probably knew about his Award some months before it was officially promulgated in the London Gazette}.

Many Salonika Awards were gazetted @ this time.

Various theories have been expounded regarding the time between the action the award was recommended for,its approval & notification & final Official sanction in the Gazette,to its final arrival with the Recipient{often well after the War had ended}though a Ribbon bar for it would have been worn as soon as notification was given.

it could range from a few weeks to many months, the average was;I think somewhere around two or three months.
