pam_vowles Posted 20 February , 2006 Share Posted 20 February , 2006 Hi, I hope someone can help me, I have the service record of my great uncle and while on a visit to Gosport submarine museum (well worth a visit) a member of the museum said that my relative served on submarines not ships. The number of the sub is in brackets after the ships name. I assumed he was on the actual ships which were mostly supply ships for submarines, Can anyone help me was he on subs or ships? I have been able to trace all of the ships and get information on them except Victory 2, does anyone know what ship this was and where I can find some info' about it? I'm a newbie and hope that my attachment of his log comes out ok. Many thanks.

Malcolm Posted 20 February , 2006 Share Posted 20 February , 2006 Submarines were K3 L33 L19 ? ( C&M)? L4 The named units are Depot ships/ shore bases. Aye Malcolm
Horace Bachelor Posted 21 February , 2006 Share Posted 21 February , 2006 The named units are Depot ships/ shore bases. Except for Royalist which was an Arethusa class cruiser which was brand new when your G Uncle joined her in March 1915 Pam. He appears to have stayed with her until July 1917 if I'm reading the record correctly. Royalist was with the 4th Light Cruiser Squadron in May 1916 and was present at Jutland. Rich. kin47 Posted 21 February , 2006 Share Posted 21 February , 2006 Hello The listing TITANIA (C&M) indicates he was on the depot ship and worked in "care and maintenance" of any number of laid up submarines in that Flotilla. All best don
Terry Denham Posted 21 February , 2006 Share Posted 21 February , 2006 Victory II and Dolphin were shore bases (Crystal Palace and Gosport respectively).

Horace Bachelor Posted 21 February , 2006 Share Posted 21 February , 2006 Terry, I've seen that before somewhere, re Victory II at Crystal Palace. Now that seems a fairly bizarre place for a Naval base. Do you know what it was used for? Rich.
Terry Denham Posted 21 February , 2006 Share Posted 21 February , 2006 It was a training base and had strong RND connections. I am sure others will have the exact details. It paid off (closed) on 21.03.
Horace Bachelor Posted 21 February , 2006 Share Posted 21 February , 2006 Thanks Terry, I wonder if the base was at The Crystal Palace or just in the area, ie Sydenham?
