Jon Miller Posted 20 February , 2006 Share Posted 20 February , 2006 I've generally gone along with the idea that a company's strength was about 250 out of a battalion strength of 1000 or so. But it struck me today that this figure may have changed by the end of the war. I know that brigades only had 3 battalions each in 1918, so I was wondering if the downsizing carried on down as far as company level? Please could someone advise as to what number strength would generally apply to a company, say, a couple of months before the end of the war? Thanks Jon. Muerrisch Posted 20 February , 2006 Share Posted 20 February , 2006 Other than the general fact that companies were never to strength in the front line, there was little systematic change in totals during the war, just the emergence of specialisms. These tended to push more and more men into Bn HQ or sections directly under it.
