CarylW Posted 19 February , 2006 Share Posted 19 February , 2006 Caernarvon & Denbigh Herald May 18th 1917 Death of Telegraphist It is with regret that we announce the death of Telegraphist John E Cox, son of Lieut and Quartermaster J.R Cox 26th RWF, The Barracks Telegraphist Cox met his death on 5th May whilst serving as a wireless operator on a minesweeper, which was torpedoed by an enemy submarine and two officers and twenty men are reported missing Cox joined the Navy at the age of 16, and had over three years of service. He was educated at the Higher Grade School Colwyn Bay and completed his education at the Caernarvon County school. As a member of the Caernarvon and County Boy Scouts he was well liked by everyone. His superior officers thought a great deal of him and always remarked how cheery, hard working and clever he was. In fact he had a brilliant career in front of him. He died at his post, and he was on duty in his wireless cabin when the ship was torpedoed Not forgotten

CarylW Posted 20 February , 2006 Author Share Posted 20 February , 2006 Thanks to you both. I wondered which ship, but meant to look at CWGC today for him Here he is COX, JOHN EGBERT Initials: J E Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Telegraphist Regiment: Royal Navy Unit Text: H.M.S. "Lavender." Age: 19 Date of Death: 05/05/1917 Service No: J/29860 Additional information: Son of Capt. J. R. P. and Mrs. Cox, of 46, Farrar Rd., Bangor. Native of Carnarvon, North Wales. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: 22. Memorial: PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL Would this mean his body wasn't found? He is possibly on a Caernarvon memorial Looks as though his father survived, Capt. J. R. P Cox RWF, he isn't on CWGC Caryl
Hywyn Posted 20 February , 2006 Share Posted 20 February , 2006 Caryl There is a Jack Cox on the Caernarfon ( Town) memorial. It's a good chance it's him. See www.rootsweb.com/~wlsccaer/memorial.html With the address being Bangor I had expected to see him on the one there but not so according to this http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~alw...Cofeb/index.htm Hywyn
