Remembered Today:

HMS Terror

My great grandfather William Peasey served on the monitor HMS Terror from July 1916 until November 1918. I think that the purpose of a monitor was to bombard shore positions but I have no real idea of the operations, if any that HMS Terror would have carried out, during the war. The family have always claimed that my great grandfather’s ship was torpedoed, but didn’t sink. I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me what monitors were used for? Any information about any operations that HMS Terror may have undertaken and if the story about HMS Terror being torpedoed are true.

Many Thanks

Scott

HMS TERROR, Erebus class monitor of 8000 tons, launched 18/5/1916. Armed with 2 x 15 inch guns, 8 x 4 inch. Armour 6 inch side, 5 inch top deck, 13 inch guns. It had a blister hull ( double skinned basically) which proved to be effective against torpedo attack as both were attacked. With sister ship EREBUS they were the most successful designed monitors. Both were based at Dover 1916 to 1918. Terror was sunk by aicraft action off Derna 24/2/1941.

There is a photo of HMS Terror in the IWM.

The "Erebus" Class Monitors were shallow draft vessels designed for coastal bombardment. They were of 8000 tons dsisplacement and armed with 2 x 15" guns and 2 x 6" guns and smaller weapons. TERROR, when she came into service in 1916 was attached to the Dover Patrol for bombardment purposes in relation to the Belgian coast. On 16th October, 1916, whilst at anchpor off Dunkirk she was hit by three torpedoes from German torpedo boats. She was badly damaged but managed to beach herself. She was later towed to Portsmouth for repairs. She was a gunnerey trials ship between the wars until she was despatched to Singapore in 1933-39 (and gave her name to the Singapore Naval Base). She was sunk by dive bombers off the North African coast in 1941.

Hello

Humphreys in THE DOVER PATROL 1914-1918 gives the date of TERROR's torpedoing as 19 October 1917. Whether 1916 or 1917, no men were lost in the monitor in the attack.

All best

Thank you for all this information it is really useful.

I have one final question would HMS Terror have been involved in the assaults of Zeebrugge and Ostend in April 1918?

Thanks

Scott

Scott,

I thought you might be interested in the following extracts from my grandfather's diary. He was serving aboard the destroyer HMS Moorsom:

2/08/17 Monitor HMS Terror 17” guns fired on enemy’s minelayers. Whether of not the Terror hit any of them we do not know owing to their smoke screens covering them. They took cover under their land batteries.

22/10/17 Escort duties Folkestone, Calais and Boulogne, three or four trips. Monitor Terror, 15” guns, came in badly mauled. Torpedoed three times and did not sink.

27/09/18 Friday. Four destroyers and remainder of monitors arrived during afternoon. Weighed at 11:00pm and went up the coast and bombarded Ostend and Zeebrugge with Terror and Erebus.

Regards,

John

Ref John's (JEB) post - 28 Sept 18 was the start of 4th Ypres, and other monitors (HMS Clive, if remembering correctly) were in action that day in support which, no doubt, was what Terror and Erebus were up to as well.
