Hi

Would it be possible for someone to help confirm the following person for me using a SDGW CD-Rom?

I'm looking for a David Niven who more than likely enlisted in Edinburgh. I'm assuming he initially enlisted into the Royal Scots because his marriage certificate, dated 23rd April 1915, stated he was a soldier in the Royal Scots. There is a picture in the Edinburgh Evening News dated 30th January 1918 of a Pte David Niven, Royal Scots, who resided at 35 Milton Street but I can't find him in the paper's Casualty Rolls. The address mentioned under the photo is close to the one I'm after [30 Milton Street], but the trouble is I can't find a Pte David Niven anywhere in my 'Royal Scots Who Died in the Great War' book.

Looking at the other David Nivens on the CWGC website I think he may have been attached to another unit at the time of his death. The one that looks most likely to me is Pte 202574 David Niven, 1st Cameronians [scottish Rifles] simply because this David died on the 26th November 1917 which is closet date for the photo I mentioned of the Royal Scots David Niven.

Any help appreciated.

He may be your man if you are looking for someone who was originally in the RSF

Hi Mandy

A very quick response and very helpful too!

The man I'm after was born at 97 High Street Portobello, therefore it looks like the first option you mentioned is the right one [Pte 202574 1st Cameronians]. He is the closest David Niven to the one whose picture is in the paper and the birthplace and enlistment place match.

Many thanks indeed for all your help.
