Remembered Today:

Pam Pam Farm, Cambrai

Can anyone enlighten me as to the exact location of Pam Pam Farm near Cambrai?

I have just read an orginal letter from a soldier written to a fellow soldier's wife reporting the circumstances of the husband's death and his burial location 'in a trench near Pam Pam Farm'.

The soldier concerned was a relative of a friend of mine and he was serving in 6 Bn, The Buffs when killed by a shell on 30.11.17 near Cambrai. His grave was never found or his body not identified later and his name is now on the Cambrai Memorial.

In a previous thread (dated early 2004) Graham McAdam reported that the Farm was a restarant for some time but was burned down about 10 years ago

There is a restaurant in Tenby which I regulary pass, and spookily it is also called Pam Pam

Thanks to everyone who has helped with this.

I do not have the letter in my possession at the moment but the man in question was Pte James Scott CHARLTON 203521 6/Buffs Died 30.11.17. The writer of the letter was a Pte Flight.

It was a sobering read in the pub last week when this original letter was thrust in front of me along with other memorabilia.

Charlton had previously served with the 1st Battalion Buffs and started off as a New Army man with number G9672. This looks like a 1915 enlistment although he wasn't overseas in time to get a 14/15 star.

Interestingly, the only Flight I can see in the Buffs was Peter Thomas Flight. He was also killed on 30/11/1917 at Cambrai. He had gone overseas on 7/10/1915 to the 8th Bn and then served with the 1st and 6th. He had been gazetted for the MM on 14/11/1916.

Maybe the Flight in the letter was serving with another Regiment - I notice there are a couple in the West Kents.

I have the BWM/VM roll for Charlton so if you want a copy just send me an email

Yes, I did and I responded. (I think  )

Thank you for the info. Charlton's relative was most impressed and is now going to investigate further himself.
