Remembered Today:

Identify this cemetery on Pathe News Reel?

I was just looking at the Pathe News Reels and came across this scene of some French and British officers visiting a graveyard. But can anyone identify it...??

There are a few clues for the sleuths among you....

The graveyard is on a very steep incline.

The vsitors have to climb down a cutting, which looks as though it is by the side of a road. The visitors then appear to go under the road (or it might be a bridge).

In the graveyard, you can clearly see a marker for Pte W Hall.

A high ranking French Officer wants to pay his respects to the grave immediately next to Pte Hall.

It looks to me as if the ceremony is immediately post war. There are ladies present and there are Scouts on hand to give directions.

You can view the film by clicking here Pathe News Reel

The film is about 1 minute 10 seconds long and is about 1 Meg big, so please don't download this if you have a slow internet connection.

The major clues occur after about 50 seconds.

<_< Racing,

I have studied the clip two or three times, but am uncertain whether the officers in "non-french" uniform are British or some other nationality - perhaps American? This may make a difference?

Regards

Peter

There are a lot of W Halls on the GWGC database 400+ from WW1 - pity we cant make out the grave next to his that they are looking at. Assuming the cemetery hasnt been gathereed in to another one, the steep slope is a big clue - I cant think of many on slopes like that. Is that sea in the far distance?

Wondered if it was Wimereux? (Is Mcrae's grave the one beside Halls?)

possibly Thiepval?

small largely Indian Cem just outside Montreuil?

I am tending to assume it is in France, but maybe this is a mistaken assumption.

Yes, I think you are right. Some of the officers do appear to be American. So Pte W Hall may not be British.

I am not sure if that is the sea in the background. But it is certainly a large valley, and this cemetery is very high up this hill/mountain.

In the last few frames, as the French officer is making his way up the hill, there appears to be a large timber structure (support?) behind him. Perhaps a footbridge...?

Did the French boy scouts have a different uniform to British/American scouts...?
