Remembered Today:

Z Prefix to regimental number

This has most likely been asked and answered before, but I noticed a 1914 Star trio to the 1/Rifle Brigade on ebay in which the fellow's unit number is preceded by "Z". Significace?

Lancers, some Home County regiments (regulars), 3/South Wales Borderers and possibly also "line" in some line regiments.

Yes Z prefix was used for some Rifle Brigade and LZ for London Division.

Just to qualify that... London Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and division not being used in the same context as it is with an infantry division.

The L prefix for infantry regiments indicated a regular army enlistment; in the RFA it indicated a wartime enlistment ('Limited' engagement).

Just a few more RNVR examples to add to LZ = London as mentioned by Bob and Paul above

BZ = Bristol

CZ = Clyde

MZ = Merseyside

SZ = Sussex

TZ = Tyneside (as in my grandfather's TZ/89)

by the end of the war there may have been others (?)

Regards
