chrisharley9 Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Can any Pal give me any pointers towards the service of this chap He was born about c1869 in Hornsey, Middlesex & was resident in Hammersmith during the 1901 census. With his service no of 405 would he have been Regular or TF? All the roll nos on his MIC have LC prefixes & his date of arrival in France is given as 15 Nov 1915 All The Best Chris
Papineau Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 The site below: http://battlefields1418.50megs.com/middx.htm shows that on 15.11.15 the 18th Bn landed in France; so he would have had a PW prefix (Public Works) to his original number and thus be a war time volunteer. Rup Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Possibly 16th Public Schools or 18th Public works battalion,p.s. or p.w. prefix sometimes missed out when later transfered to a different regiment.
Papineau Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Can't be 16th Bn because of the date, surely? Glad the information was of interest, Chris.
Rup Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 I think it is likely he's 18th Middlesex but 16th and 17th were landing at a similar time and not everyman landed on same date. A quick look at m.i.c. shows a F/405 so rules out 17th battalion.
Papineau Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 If they were on the same ship together, why didn't they land on the same day? Or did they come in different ships? Were some kept on board?
Rup Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Don,t know for sure but i think possibly the whole battalion didn,t move together, possibly part of an advance party.

AGWR Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Definitely not 17th Bn. Papineau, To answer your question, in relation to the 17th Bn. They sailed in three ships (advance party, transport and rest of battalion). The advance party and the transport landed in France a day or two earlier than the rest of battalion.
