This is the gas attack on Hill 60 at Ypres, around 200 dead if I remember correctly.

There may well be a history of the 1st and 2nd Battalions in most libraries in the old West Riding area, Huddersfield has one. Worth checking.

A Holmfirth man with the number 12088 enlisted at Huddersfield on the 4th September 1914 in a new army battalion, (9th Dukes) it seems they were taking their numbers from the same batch as the regulars in the 2nd battalion. So Collin Whitham’s date of enlistment was probably earlier than this.
