WINDSOR383 Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Albert Coopey served with the 1/5 Bn the glosters and was awarded the MM. His MIC records him as an A/WOII No.1476 & 240080 He was killed in italy on 15 June 1918. If some kind person would be able to look up any details in the 'soldiers who died in the great war'CD it would be much appreciated. regards Stu. Tom Morgan Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Stu - the only information additional to what you have already given is that he was born and enlisted in Tewkesbury. There is one different bit of information - "Soldiers Died...." says he was killed in action in "France and Flanders" which is an error, of course. Glosters Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Sgt. Coopey's MM was awarded for "fine leading and gallantry during the attack on the Farm." This was the attack on Tombois Farm 17 April 1917. (Ref. War Diary). 5th Glosters Gazette shows that was time-expired whilst on active service but re-engaged for the duration of the war. He probably shows up for his promotions to sergt too. Steve From the Cheltenham & Gloster Graphic July 1918:

Glosters Posted 10 February , 2006 Share Posted 10 February , 2006 1/5th arrived in Italy by train 24 Nov. 1917. Coopey was killed on the first day of the Battle of Piave when the battalion lost 3 officers killed, 6 missing, 7 wounded, 24 OR killed, 114 missing, 64 wounded. The Battalion returned to France 17 Sept. 1918. Steve p.s. The Chelt & Gloster Graphic is not seen very often and war time editions are expensive. I have complete volumes for 1914, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1919. The 1917 edition is hard to find.
