RWF Roll of Honour in the Reg Records Vol IV shows Pte 40124 Robert Thomas 1st Bn KIA France 28/8/1916. Born Llanddeiniolen ( the parish in which the address lies) CWGC does not show Pte 40124 Robert or R Thomas for that or any other date. Myrtle Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Hywyn I had a quick look at CWGC and noticed the following. Related to Robert ? Pte Arthur Thomas 40174 KiA 26 years old 20/07/1916 Son of David & Catherine Thomas of Bwlch Gwyn, Ebenezer. SDGW B: Llanddeiniolen, Carn. En: Llanberis Res: Cwmglo
Terry Denham Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Also... Note the similarity of service number. 40124 and 40174 Could be a typo somewhere. If you need to get R.Thomas' death certificate to try to prove that he has been missed from the lists, his GRO Overseas Death Index number is I.28.49. This will mean that you can get it online at the reduced rate of £7.
Myrtle Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Also... Note the similarity of service number. 40124 and 40174 I thought the same Terry, when I first came across Arthur but the two men have different details (battalions etc) in SDGW and looking at the 1901 census there appear to be two lads of appropriate age named Arthur and Robert. It is likely that Robert's mother and father were Jane and Foulk Thomas, the latter being a Slate Quarrier. Arthur doesn't appear to be Robert's brother but may have been a cousin. Terry Denham Posted 9 February , 2006 Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Myrtle You are right. I should have looked further. Alfred is in the GRO Index under ref I.29.
Hywyn Posted 9 February , 2006 Author Share Posted 9 February , 2006 Myrtle/Terry Thanks for your interest. Arthur Thomas is a different casualty on the same Memorial. If you've still got the 1901 Census on your history files could I possibly have them? At the moment I'm not going to cough up £7 on the Death Cert but I appreciate the info. I was not aware that it was possible to get them so I'm now slightly higher up the learning curve. I'll email the CWGC with the details in case theres a typo and he's under another initial. There are 611 Thomas in 1916. Too much even for my enthusiasm! Hywyn
