According to the 1901 census Jethro was born in Skelton and was resident in Hemsworth with two sisters and mother Eliza. There is no sign of his father William. His mother was listed as the head of the house and appeared to take in lodgers; eight of them. Jethro's occupation at that time was Coal Miner Hewer.
