Gloucestershire Regiment 238843 and RE 497078 are Territorial numbers.

The Gloucestershire number is a 4th Battalion number, though whether 1/4th, 2/4th, etc. cannot be worked out merely from the number.

The RE number is for the 2nd South Midlands Field Companies - i.e. 1/2nd and 2/2nd (raised at Gloucester) which later became 475th Field Company (1/2nd) in 48th Division (as were the 1/4th Gloucesters incidentally, but that could be coincidence) and 477th Field Company (2/2nd) who were in 61st Division.

The WR/ number refers to the Waterways and Railways Division of RE which was a branch of the RE from 1917 onwards.

There seem to be no earlier TF numbers shown which MAY imply that he went overseas after early 1917.

Steve.
