That doesn't look like a real horse to me. Nor does the tree behind, show us the horses feet.

Thanks for you reply. But this is only half the pic; it's actually a full-figured view of man, horse and tree. I strongly suspect the cap badge to be cavalry; it isn't anything I've seen before and it reminds me of the lancer cap, in that it's very different from the standard army headgear.
