philg Posted 3 February , 2006 Share Posted 3 February , 2006 I've just been to the Surrey History Centre to have a look at the AVL for Holmbury St. Mary, but would you believe they havn't got it. I've looked through the Electoral Rolls for the district as well just in case, but the info is not there. Has anyone by any chance got a copy of the AVL for that area? I'm looking for the Shephard brothers, John, Arthur, George and Reginald. They lived at Cherry Bank or The Glade, Holmbury St. Mary. Trying to find out their regiments. Does anyone know is the NA holds these records? cheers Phil

philg Posted 3 February , 2006 Author Share Posted 3 February , 2006 The AVL was used to record all men on active service who were eligable to vote but could not due to fighting overseas. It lists name, home address, regiment and service number. So if you have a relative who served in the forces and know where he lived but don't know what regiment he was in, this will tell you......and off you go. delta Posted 3 February , 2006 Share Posted 3 February , 2006 What a brilliantly simple thing - never heard of it but great system. Perhaps Chris should make more of it in the mother site Thanx for the help Stephen
