I've a Victory Medal to a Private 18691 Frederick W Clemo, Devon Regiment, who, according to the 1901 Census was a Merchant Seaman from Padstow, Cornwall. Seems odd that a Merchant Seaman should join the army, and not serve in some naval capacity!

Anyone else seen a similar thing?

Duncan.

My grandfather was in the merchant navy as 1st Officer (1st mate), pre-war, but joined the army and is listed in the R.A.M.C. then he gets a temperary commission in 1916 in the RNR as lieutenant. Then seems to be moved again to the Royal Engineers waterways and docks. see his mic attached. Why he joined the army is a mystery.

Maybe your relative was out of the merchant navy to long to still be in the reserve.

regards

Phil
