Hi all,

I've only just found this forum and I'm hoping that someone out there can help.

I'm researching my family tree and have discovered that my great grandfather was killed on the HMT Othonna. What I do not know and would like to know is how the Othonna sank? (I believe there was an explosion??) How many men died? Where did it sink and are there any other resources available to research this further.

Sorry that I have so many questions in my first posting and any information is very gratefully received.

Best wishes

Craig

Hello Craig,

Welcome aboard.

20th April 1917, Hired Trawler Othonna, 180grt, Mined off Tod Head, Fife Ness, Scotland by mine laid by German submarine SMU UC41.

Othonna was a commissioned trawler and served as part of the Auxiliary Fleet.

Judging by Don's casualty list, it appears the whole crew was lost.

Best wishes

David

"Judging by Don's casualty list, it appears the whole crew was lost."

There was at least one survivour: there were no officers in the loss.

A note of clarification to explain what causes some confusion in RNR crews. A Second Hand is equivalent to a first lieutenant and can command. In a number of cases, all hands were lost in a trawler or a drifter and the commanding officer was a Second Hand, RNR.

All best

Hello,

fantastic information, thanks a lot!!

I have found out a lot more about my great grandfather and WW1 in the last few days from various places and it is absolutely fascinating. Again thanks so much and will be on this a lot more in the future!

By the way my great grandfather was Thomas George Davies from Milford Haven in West Wales.

Thanks again

Craig
