Kevin O'Marah Posted 22 January , 2006 Share Posted 22 January , 2006 Seeking information on the following, S.S. Heathpark(Greenock) and S.S. Dungeness 1917-1918 Diolch Kevin
Northern Soul Posted 22 January , 2006 Share Posted 22 January , 2006 Kevin, SS Heathpark was a fairly new cargo steamer. She was 1,963 gross tons, 280ft x 41.9ft, single screw. Built 1917 by Greenock & Grangemouth Dockyard Co, Grangemouth for Denholm Line Steamers (J. & J. Denholm), Greenock. On 5th Oct.1918 she sailed from Bilbao for Maryport with a cargo of ore and went missing the same day. Probably torpedoed and sunk by U.91. All hands were lost - 25 lives. I'm afraid I can't supply any information on the Dungeness. Andy.
Michael Lowrey Posted 22 January , 2006 Share Posted 22 January , 2006 Dungeness was a 2748 grt steamer built in 1904. In 1917, she came under the control of the Letricheux Line. On May 30, 1918 she was torpedoed by UC 17 3 miles off Sunderland but reached port (4 killed). The ship changed owners, names, and countries a few times before being damaged by mine in 1944 and broken up in the USSR in 1949. Best wishes, Michael
Kevin O'Marah Posted 23 January , 2006 Author Share Posted 23 January , 2006 Many, many thanks to you both, for the info. Two local lads were lost on these ships. Again Diolch Kevin
