Did next of kin get medals for soldiers who died

Yes, they would normally be sent them providing of course the details were known etc. irrespective of whether it was in action or not.

They also received a commemorative plaque after the war with a certificate - see other threads for this.

in action? Does anybody know this?

The NOK were sent the Bronze Memorial Plaque, Commemorative Scroll and condolence fascimile letter and any campaign and gallantry awards that the deceased recipient were entitled to. The main focus was the plaque itself which carried the recipients name within a panel on the obverse - (facing front), this took pride of place in many homes and served as a focal memorial for remembrance of their lost one.

The Medals of UK & Commonwealth/Empire Troops who died were automatically sent to the Recorded "Next of Kin" according to the Soldiers records @ the time,{ie usually the Wife if Married,The Parents,or eldest surviving Brother/then Sister,if the Parents were deceased, going through a prescribed listing of recognised NoK,through Grandparents,Children's Home Guardian, even Employer,if no other kin survived.

If you play around with the search facility in the Uniforms Arms Insignia etc forum, you will be rewarded with a vast collection of information on medals, who got them, how they got them and so on. You might also discover that they were not always treated with the respect which we might think they were due.
