Pronunciation - 1/4th etc

Sorry if this is a silly question, but...

In the case of a battalion such as the 1/4th Norfolks etc., how do you say the "1/4th" bit? Is it just "fourth", or "one-fourth", "first-fourth" etc.

I understand that the "1/" signifies a Territorial battalion, but have only ever seen it written down. I just wondered how to say it before I end up making a fool of myself.

Thanks

In the U.S. military, you would normally say "first of the fourth". For example, the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry regiment, was normally written 4/9 infantry, but was orally called "the fourth of the ninth". Doc

While there are no silly questions, there are, occasionally, silly answers. When in the 4/5 Black Watch, we pronounced it as " fourth fifth". The 6/7 Black Watch however, was pronounced " these &^%$£ Fife *(+_^ ".
