Guest Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 My Grandfather Pte Patrick Nulty served in Aphgn in 1919 and received the appropriste clasp. This was after serving on the Western Front. I know little of his sevice details or what he did there. Can anyone shed light on this campaign and the role of the South Lancs.
Staffsyeoman Posted 18 January , 2006 Share Posted 18 January , 2006 You can do little better than locate a copy of "Crisis on the Frontier: The Third Afghan War and the Campaign in Afghanistan 1919-1920" by Bryan Robson (Spellmount, 2004). £25 full whack but spotted in the remaindered trade. 1/S Lancs were one of the Regular battalions 'left behind' in India in 1914. The only substantial reference to them in the book is of operations against the Afridis around Ali Masjid (a name to conjure with - as Ali Musjid - from the 1878-80 war) in July 1919.
