Guest MSj Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Hi, I have in my family history research found a medal that does not belong to (or seems that way) one of my family. I have tried to do a search on the name at the Records Web site to no avail. The medal has the following around the edge. M.25971 E.S.Brown. ACT.E.R.A.4.R.N I am guessing the M number is the guys Regt Number? His name I guess is E.S.Brown And the other information is a mystery. I think the medal is the Victory Medal has a winged Angel on the back and the Inscription "The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919" on the front. Any help on trying to track down this gent so I can see why it ended up in our familys pockets. (I wonder if it was a trade? As it was in a collection of cap badges and other military stuff that my Dad had?) Cheers MJ
Pte1643 Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Hi again Mark. Your mans service number has a "Prefix". In this case an M. The M Prefix tells you he was a "Miscellaneous" Naval Man, to put it in Laymans terms. His number... M25971 His Name... E.S. Brown. The "Suffix" letters show his trade, in this case... ACT E R A 4 He was an "Acting Engine Room Artificer". I'm guessing the 4 means 4th Class, I'm not really "Up" on th Navy so don't take this as gospel. I expect another forum member will be able to say more precisely. All The Best. Mark. (Also )
Stebie9173 Posted 17 January , 2006 Share Posted 17 January , 2006 Try searching here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...y=*&queryType=1 You can downloaded seamen's records at £3.50 each. (Though the search appears to be down at the moment! Typical...) Steve.
